Gia Binh International Airport (Bac Ninh) is planned with a capacity of 50 million passengers per year and four runways by 2050.

The Minister of Construction has just approved the adjusted Master Plan for Gia Binh International Airport for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

The airport will be located in the communes of Gia Binh, Luong Tai, Nhan Thang, and Lam Thao (Bac Ninh), classified as a 4E-level airport and serving dual purposes for both civilian and national defense use. In the phase to 2030, Gia Binh Airport is planned with a capacity of approximately 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tons of cargo per year. It will be capable of handling large aircraft such as B777, B787, A350, A321, as well as VIP and special-purpose aircraft.

By 2050, the airport is expected to handle around 50 million passengers and 2.5 million tons of cargo annually.

The new plan increases Gia Binh Airport’s capacity by six times compared to the previous plan. The current plan only allows the airport to handle 5 million passengers and 250,000 tons of cargo per year by 2030, and about 15 million passengers and 1 million tons of cargo per year by 2050.

Runways and aprons: In the phase to 2030, Gia Binh Airport is planned with two runways in the northern area, each measuring 3,500 x 45 meters, spaced 366 meters apart, with standard paved shoulders. The passenger and cargo terminal area will include 81 aircraft parking stands.

Looking ahead to 2050, the airport will add two more runways in the southern area, also 3,500 x 45 meters in size and spaced 366 meters apart. The aircraft apron area around the passenger and cargo terminals will be expanded to about 123 parking stands. In the current plan, the airport only has one runway of 3,500 x 45 meters up to 2050.

Gia Binh Airport is expected to require approximately 1,959 hectares of land for the 2021–2030 period with a vision to 2050 — nearly five times larger than the previous plan. Of this, 957 hectares are allocated for civil aviation facilities, around 927 hectares for runway areas, and about 75 hectares for security functions under the management of the Ministry of Public Security.

The airport will also include a VIP terminal for special aircraft, located in the southwest area of the passenger terminal, on a land plot of approximately 5.4 hectares.

Gia Binh Airport was started by the Ministry of Public Security in early December 2024, covering an area of about 125 hectares, and is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. Initially, it will serve as a level-3 helipad, military-grade level 3, and civil aviation equivalent to level 3C according to ICAO standards.

The airport will serve the operational needs of the Public Security Air Regiment, ensuring national security while supporting socioeconomic development — a model similar to Phan Thiet Airport.

Gia Binh International Airport is located about 20 km from Thuan Thanh III Industrial Park – Subzone C and 65 km from Nghia Hung Industrial Park.
