On October 18, 2024, the cooperation agreement signing ceremony between the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province and World Wildlife Fund Vietnam (WWF) was held at the headquarters of the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province. The Deputy Secretary of the provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province Nguyen Van Phuong; the Director of WWF Asia-Pacific Office Jean – Paul Paddack; Mr. Van Ngoc Thinh – the Director General of WWF Vietnam attended the ceremony.

In Thua Thien Hue province, WWF and WWF Vietnam Office have carried out various projects, contributing to improving the sustainable management capacity of natural resources. Also, they helped the province to raise the awareness and improve the livelihood of local community to reduce the danger of illegal natural resource exploitation and poaching as well as determine the biodiversity values from forest and sustainable conservation.
Particularly, “Hue – the smart plastic city in Central Vietnam” has a positive influence on the landscape and environment of Thua Thien Hue province in general and Hue city in particular. The project supports the classification, collection and handling of waste; promotes the recovery of recyclables from landfills. This contributed to raising the awareness and behavior of residents of plastic waste, making contribution to a greener, brighter and cleaner city.
In addition, through WWF organization, the local network of nature reserves connected with many other important partners such as World Bank, Asia Development Bank, International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources, the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of the Federal Republic of Germany, United States Agency for International Development. These international organizations have contributed to supporting forest management, forest protection, natural conservation, climate change adaptation as well as advertised Thua Thien Hue and its people to the world.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman Nguyen Van Phuong kindly informed that the cooperation agreement signed between the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province Nguyen Van Phuong and WWF Vietnam office would allow the two sides to develop cooperation framework in 2025-2030 period, call for greater involvement, provide long-term support to Thua Thien Hue during implementing projects/programs related to biodiversity and sustainable development. It is one of the key missions of Thua Thien Hue in the coming time, particularly Thua Thien Hue is becoming a centrally-governed city in 2025.
The leader of Thua Thien Hue province expected that WWF and WWF Vietnam Office would care and accompany Thua Thien Hue during carrying out and expanding to other fields such as environment protection, landscape conservation, value chain development and resident’s livelihood improvement.
“This event holds a significant meaning to the cooperative relation between Thua Thien Hue and WWF, marks a new chapter in bilateral cooperation, particularly biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development”, said Chairman Nguyen Van Phuong.

At the ceremony, the People’s Committee of Thua Thien Hue province and World Wildlife Fund (WWF) discussed about previous cooperation and future direction. Special attention would be paid to conserving and promoting biodiversity; developing value chain; enhancing the livelihood of forest-dependent community; protecting the environment; classifying wastes at source in city; managing plastic waste.
